HPE FAQ

What is Hospice?

Hospice is a registered non-profit community agency, providing physical, psychological, social, spiritual, practical support to people living with life-threatening illness and their loved ones. Hospice also provides bereavement support after a loss has occurred. Hospice is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

What Does Hospice Mean?

In medieval times, a hospice was a place of shelter or sanctuary for travelers, pilgrims and others. No journey in life is more difficult than the path followed by those suffering a life-threatening illness, so ‘hospice’ has now become a philosophy of care built around the quality of life for the dying and those that care for them.

How is it Funded?

Hospice Prince Edward relies heavily (approximately 25% of our annual budget) on the participation from our community with our direct mail campaign, personal donations, memorial donations and fundraising projects. Hospice is also funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. In the past we have also received funding from Quinte United Way. Hospice Prince Edward has also received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to support the agency and to improve and expand its services, community partnerships and funding base as well as improving access to end of life and bereavement support services.

What is Hospice Palliative Care?

Hospice palliative care is active, compassionate care directed towards improving the quality of life of those with a life-threatening illness. Hospice palliative care supports people diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and their families, while living with the illness, during the time of dying and death and for a bereavement period.

Hospice palliative care:

  • Centres on the person and the family
  • Is directed towards meeting physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs
  • Is sensitive to personal, cultural and religious beliefs, values and practices
  • Encourages involvement in planning treatment and care as well as making choices based on knowledge and understanding
  • Is provided through the collaborative work of an interdisciplinary team of caregivers and service providers
