Who Are The Volunteers?
Hospice volunteers are men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Volunteers are both professionals and non-professionals who have made a commitment to share their life experiences. Both retired and working people support our community by volunteering with Hospice. Hospice Prince Edward offers a variety of volunteer opportunities; from fundraising to direct client care. Younger people can be involved, especially teens! There are many ways that teens can be of help through volunteering with Hospice from dog walking to playtime with young children living in the home.
How Are The Volunteers Chosen?
Once a person expresses an interest in Hospice, he/she will meet with our coordinator to discuss volunteer opportunities that meet the needs of both the agency and the volunteer. If interested in volunteering for client care, individuals will need to complete Hospice Prince Edward Training Program. Participants examine closely their own attitudes and feelings concerning issues such as disease, illness and death.
What Can The Volunteer Do?
Our volunteers help with client care fundraising, ticket selling and/or office help.
Our client care volunteers perform services that you might ask a neighbour or relative to help with. Each situation is individual and volunteer activities may include:
- Staying with the client while a spouse or family members rests or runs errands
- Helping out with small household chores & light lunches
- Taking client for outings (walks, etc)
- Helping with shopping or pick up prescriptions
- Visiting with the client and family members, offering support
- Helping in keeping the client comfortable
- Sometimes just sit and listen
- Providing simple, personal care procedures
- Read
- Listen to Audio Cd's / music
Board of Directors
Hospice relies on caring, community people with an interest in Hospice to volunteer to serve on the Board of Directors. The Board, nominated and elected at the Annual General Meeting, ensures the sound operation of the organization while promoting Hospice throughout our community.
